The AudioQuest Dragon XLR is the absolute flagship of the "Mythical Creatures" series, representing the pinnacle of AudioQuest’s cable engineering. It is designed with one goal: to be "sonically invisible" by minimizing the distortion and noise that typically enter a signal path.
The Core Materials: Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS)
- Unlike lower-tier cables that use copper or silver-plated copper, the Dragon uses Solid Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS).
ZERO-Tech (No Characteristic Impedance)
- This is the "secret sauce" of the Mythical Creatures line. Standard cables have a characteristic impedance that can cause signal reflections and "smearing." ZERO-Tech eliminates the electrostatic field between the high and low signal conductors.
Level 7 Noise Dissipation
AudioQuest ranks their noise dissipation by levels; Level 7 is their highest tier. It utilizes:
- Graphene/Carbon Mesh-Network: These materials help drain Radio Frequency (RF) noise away from the signal.
- 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS): You’ll notice two small black battery packs attached to the cable. These apply a constant 72V DC field to the insulation, "biasing" the molecules so they don’t store and release energy into the signal, which results in a much "blacker" (quieter) background.
Build & Terminations

FEP Air-Tubes: The conductors are suspended in FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene) air-tubes. Since air is the best insulator (dielectric), this minimizes signal energy absorption.
- Hanging-Silver Plugs: The XLR connectors are made of high-purity Red Copper and then submerged in a silver vat (hanging-silver) rather than being tumbled in a drum. This ensures a thicker, smoother plating for better conductivity.
