The Skeletal "Tancast 8" Plinth
Unlike many high-end decks that use heavy wood or metal, the Planar 8 uses a skeletal plinth design.
- Material: It is constructed from Tancast 8, an ultra-lightweight polyurethane foam core developed for the aerospace industry.
- Design: This foam is sandwiched between two layers of High-Pressure Laminate (HPL). The result is a chassis that is 30% lighter than the previous RP8 while being significantly more rigid.
Triple-Layer Glass Platter
The platter is where Rega does want mass, but only in specific places.
- Flywheel Effect: It uses a three-piece laminated glass design. By bonding different layers of glass, Rega concentrates the weight at the outer rim to maximize the flywheel effect (keeping speed stable) while keeping the center near the bearing light.
- Sub-platter: It sits on a single-piece machined aluminum sub-platter and a tool-steel spindle housed in a custom brass housing.
RB880 Tonearm
The Planar 8 comes standard with the RB880 tonearm, which features:
- Zero-Tolerance Bearings: Hand-adjusted to less than 15$1/1000\text{th of a mm}$ for friction-free movement.
- Improved Materials: A new low-mass aluminum and stainless steel vertical bearing assembly for better stability.
- Cabling: High-quality, low-capacitance phono cables with locking RCA plugs to ensure a clean signal.
Neo PSU (Power Supply Unit)
The turntable is powered by an external Neo PSU, which is a dedicated motor controller.
- Stability: It uses a digital signal processing (DSP) generator to create a near-perfect sinusoidal waveform, ensuring the 24V motor turns at an exact, stable speed.
- Control: It allows for electronic speed changes (33/45 RPM) and fine speed adjustment via the back panel.
