The AudioQuest Dragon Bass is the flagship "Mythical Creature" series speaker cable, specifically engineered to handle the bass and midrange frequencies in a high-end bi-wire or tri-wire setup.
Because of its specialized noise-dissipation circuitry, it is not a full-range cable; it is designed to be paired with the Dragon Zero (which handles the high frequencies).
1. The Core Technology
AudioQuest markets the Dragon as being "sonically invisible." To achieve this, they utilize several proprietary technologies:
- Solid Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS): Unlike most cables that use copper, the Dragon uses AudioQuest's highest-purity solid silver. The "Perfect-Surface" processing minimizes distortion caused by grain boundaries and strand interaction.
- ZERO-Tech (No Characteristic Impedance): Traditionally, the mismatch between an amplifier's output impedance and a speaker's input impedance causes signal compression. ZERO-Tech eliminates the cable's characteristic impedance, allowing for uncompressed current transfer and better "slam" or transient response.
- 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS): You’ll notice a small battery pack attached to the cables. This creates a strong, stable electrostatic field that polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. This reduces energy storage in the insulation, which otherwise smears the signal.
- RF/ND-Tech (Radio-Frequency Ground-Noise Dissipation): This is the "secret sauce" of the Bass model. It cancels induced RF noise. However, because this technology is so aggressive, it effectively filters out frequencies above 10kHz—which is why you cannot use this cable for the treble/high-frequency input.
