The HANA EH MKII is a high-output moving coil (HOMC) phono cartridge handcrafted in Yokohama, Japan by Excel Sound. It acts as an entry point into the refinement of moving coil design while staying compatible with standard Moving Magnet (MM) phono stages.
Key Improvements Over the Original EH
The MKII revision trickles down technologies first developed for Hana’s higher-end M Series and flagship Umami cartridges:
- Brass-Capped Body & Threaded Inserts: The body design is updated with a heavy brass top cap, increasing cartridge mass to 8.6g. This improves mechanical coupling with the headshell and provides built-in threaded screw holes, eliminating the hassle of tiny nuts during alignment.
- Elastomeric Body Coating: The resin shell features a specialized matte elastomeric dampening finish designed to suppress unwanted mechanical resonances and clarify low-level details.
- Cryogenic Treatment: Critical parts of the magnetic generator and the gold-plated output pins undergo cryogenic treatment to optimize conductivity and lower signal distortion.
