The "Nd" in the name refers to Neodymium, as this series is widely considered the first to use the world’s most powerful commercially available magnet (N55 Neodymium) in a moving magnet design.
Key Features & Technology
The Nd5 sits in the middle of Rega’s MM lineup, positioned between the entry-level Nd3 and the flagship Nd7.
- Stylus Profile: It features a "Perfect Elliptical" nude diamond stylus. Unlike bonded styli (where a diamond tip is glued to a metal shank), a nude stylus is a solid piece of diamond, which reduces mass and allows for much more accurate tracking of the record groove.
- Generator Geometry: Rega redesigned the generator with "perfect symmetry" to achieve better channel balance and reduce crosstalk, resulting in a significantly wider soundstage than previous models.
- Miniaturized Coils: The Nd5 uses incredibly fine, 38-micron wire with only 1,275 turns. This low-inductance, low-impedance design helps the cartridge achieve a high-frequency response that rivals some moving coil (MC) cartridges.
- Body Design: The housing is made from glass-filled Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS), a lightweight and rigid material inspired by Rega’s high-end MC cartridges like the Ania. It features Rega’s signature 3-point mounting system, which makes installation on Rega tonearms nearly foolproof.
